The Lunar Module was a two-part spacecraft used to transport a crew of two people from the lunar orbit to the surface of the moon and back. During the take-off, the landing platform served as a launch pad for the ascent stage and, in addition, housed the landing gear, engines and fuel required for the landing. Six such spacecraft successfully landed on the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
