London Bridge refers to the many bridges that span the River Thames between the City of London and Southwark in central London. Today's crossing, which was opened to traffic in 1973, is a bridge of concrete and steel beams. It replaced a 19th-century stone arched bridge, which in turn replaced a 600-year-old medieval structure. It was preceded by a succession of wooden bridges, the first of which was built by the Roman founders of London.
