Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Bavaria near the town of Fussen and was the inspiration for Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom. Neuschwanstein literally means "New Swan Stone" which is a reference to "Swan Knight", one of the characters in an opera by Richard Wagner. King Ludwig II began construction of the castle in 1869. Today, his fairytale castle is the most visited castle in Germany, welcoming more than 1,300,000 tourists annually.
