St. Basil, commonly known as St. Basil's Cathedral, is a former church on Red Square in Moscow, Russia. The building, now a museum, is officially known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in the Trench or Pokrovsky Cathedral. It was built from 1555 to ‘61 by order of Ivan the Terrible and honors the occupation of Kazan and Astrakhan. A world-famous landmark, it was the center of development of the city from the 14th century and was the tallest building in the city until the completion of the Great Belfry of Ivan in 1600.
