The first modern Ferris wheel was designed and built by George Washington Ferris as a landmark for the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exhibition in Chicago. The term Ferris wheel was later generally used for all of these constructions. As of 2012, the 541-foot Singapore Flyer is the tallest wheel in the world.
