It was a red-tailed P-51D aircraft flown by Lieutenant Robert Williams - a Tuskegee Airman - in 1945. It participated in 50 combat missions from Italy with the 100th Fighter Squadron. Tuskegee Airmen were trained at Tuskegee Army Airfield in Alabama. During World War II, they made more than 15,000 solo expeditions to Europe and North Africa, where they were recognized as the Red Tails for the uniquely painted red tails of their aircraft.
