Big Ben is the nickname for the large clock bell at the north end of Westminster Palace in London, although today the name also refers to the clock and the clock tower. The bell weighs almost 14 tons and each face of the watch has a diameter of 23 feet. It became fully functional on September 7, 1859 and is today one of the most important symbols of London with a height of 316 feet. The watch requires tuning three times a week and old coins are added or removed periodically from the pendulum clock to maintain its accuracy.
